Mrs. Martha Cary Eppes Lennon, 88, of Oak Island died Monday, June 7, 2004, at Lower Cape Fear Hospice Care Center.

The family will receive friends at Peacock-Newnam Funeral Home today (Wednesday) from 6 to 8 p.m. Interment will be private at a later time.

Mrs. Lennon was born August 2, 1915, in Greenville, S. C., daughter of the late James Frank and Vena Adams Eppes. After many moves, Mrs. Lennon settled on Oak Island in 1976.

During World War II, she was known for knitting one item per week for the enlisted men. Over the past 20 years, she was able to travel the world. Mrs. Lennon was very involved in civic and church activities, which included being a member of Oak Island Presbyterian Church women's group and fundraising for Hospice. She was a charter member of Oak Island Presbyterian Church, and was very active in Emmaus.

Survivors include her husband of 65 years, Crom Lennon of the home; a daughter, Lucy Shearer and husband Tom of Lake Norman; a son, William Lennon; a brother, James Albert Eppes of Greenville, S. C.; a sister, Mary Ann Eppes McCullough of Greenville, S. C.; numerous nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Lennon was preceded in death by three brothers, Robert Hardy Eppes, Judge Frank Eppes and Francis Thornton Eppes.
