On 22 August 1849 most of the family of Robert and Christiana signed up to sail to America. Mary, their oldest child, was married and decided to stay in England. The far for the family is stated as 14 pounds.

They arrived in the Valley early in 1852 and went immediately to Provo, where they stayed a month and then went on to Palmyra to live. Indian problems forced them to move to Spanish Fork where there was a fort for protection. They lived there for eight years before moving to Heber Valley in the spring of 1860. They lived out their remaining years in Heber.
