Marilyn K. Riat, age 70, died Friday, May 14th at the Dignity Care Home in Salina. She was born November 27, 1938 at Skidmore, MO, the daughter of Harold and Mary Katherine (Gray) Copeland. She was a graduate of Skidmore High School with the class of 1956. She received her Bachelors Degree from Park University in 1969. She taught Elementary music at Osborne, Kansas for two years. She came to Abilene in 1962 and taught Elementary music. On September 27, 1963, she was married to Larry Riat. She had spent most of her career teaching Special Education in the Abilene School system before retiring in 1997. She was a member of KNEA, NEA Council of Exceptional Children and in 1993 was named Extra Special Educator of the year. She was a member and past President of the Dickinson County Retired School Personnel and had volunteered at the Eisenhower Library. She is survived by her husband Larry of the home; a daughter, Robin Riat of Belton, MO; sister, Margaret Anderson of Wheaton, IL; and brother, Mervyn Copeland of Glouchester, VA. Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, May 20th at First United Methodist Church, Abilene with Rev. Jim Edwards officiating. Interment will follow in the Abilene Cemetery. The family suggests memorial contributions in her memory be given to the Scholarship Fund of the Dickinson County Retired School Personnel. They may be left at or sent in care of the Danner Funeral Home P.O. Box 758 Abilene, KS 67410.
