He was born March 25, 1923, in Sheldon Township, Houston County, to Thomas and Anna (Lundall) Johnson. He was a veteran of the United States Navy, having served during World War II.
Johnson married Mary E. Haugstad and they later divorced. On April 15, 1964, he married Frances Poppe and she preceded him in death on April 22, 1989.
He owned and operated Johnson's Feed and Western Store in Caledonia for many years. He also enjoyed raising horses and a variety of birds.
Survivors include seven children: David (Barb) Johnson, Judy (Steve) Anderson, Butch (Pat) Johnson, JayNe Johnson, Carol Hood, Bonnie (Joe) Tollefson, and Karen Meiners; 12 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; one sister, Anna Jorgenson; one brother, Tommy (Evelyn) Johnson III; and his first wife, Mary Herber.
In addition to his second wife, he was preceded in death by his parents and his siblings, Jelmer, Gilbert, Norris, Arden, Leonard, Thomas II, Joe, Josephine, Mabel, and Betsy.
Memorial services were May 4 at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Caledonia. The Rev. Steven E. Meyer officiated. Burial was in Evergreen Cemetery with military honors by the Loveless-Eikens American Legion Post 191 of Caledonia.
In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred.
