Manchester United & Republic of Ireland, footballer.

A member of the team that helped secure a third consecutive FA Youth Cup triumph, for United in 1955.

He started life as an inside-forward but when the team was being rebuilt after the Munich air crash, he played at outside-left, and later as a full back.

He was part of the 1968 side who where the first English team to lift the European Cup.

Shay won 19 international caps for the Republic of Ireland – the first English person to represent them.

Shay was also the first Manchester United player to receive a pension from the club.

He finally hung up his boots for United in 1970 having played 355 games and scoring six goals.

Shay moved to Ireland where he became player-manager with Waterford United, winning two titles and three further international caps. He left at the end of the 1973/74 season.

Shay had his testimonial on 14 August 1986 when Shamrock Rovers defeated Manchester United 2-0 at Glenmalure Park.

Sadly Shay passed away on 9th June 2000, aged 63, after suffering a heart attack whilst playing golf on a golf course near Waterford.

He was the first member of the 1968 European Cup winning side to die
