Cleata M. Pitts, 98, of Retsil died Wednesday at Washington Veterans Home in Retsil. The former Cleata M. Townsend was born Oct. 2, 1893 in Johnson City, Tenn. to the late William and Elizabeth Townsend.[Her death certificate states her mother was Sara Pendley]. She grew up and attended schools in Johnson City and worked several years for a laundry there.
On March 2, 1950, she married Julius E. Pitts in Johnson City. The couple moved to Wenatchee, Chelan County, in 1954. Mrs. Pitts was again employed at a laundry until she retired in 1959. the couple moved to the veterans home in 1969. Mr. Pitts died Feb. 16, 1976. Mrs. Pitts was a member of Retsil Community Church and the World War I Veterans Auxillary at Retsil. She is survived by four nephews, Bill of Auburn, King County, Burney Dykes of Okanogan, Okanogan County, Kenneth Dykes of Omak, Okanogan County, and John of Spokane, Spokane County; two nieces, Judy Johanson of Wenatchee and Mary Farmer of Seattle; and a sister-in-law, Lola Gange of Wenatchee.
Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Thursday at Retsil community Church located at the Veterans Home in Retsil. Burial will be at the Veterans Home Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of Pendleton-Gilchrist Funeral Home. [obituary from The Sun, Bremerton, WA, Tuesday, Feb. 18, 1992].
