James Ransom (or Ranson) Jenkins was the son of Sheppard and Elizabeth Jenkins from South Carolina. He is often listed in records as "Ransom" or "Jamie".

James served in the CSA during the Civil War. He was in the 62nd Alabama Infantry Regiment, Company B. He enlisted at Davistown, Alabama on the 1st Sep 1863. He was 16 years old. On the 9th Apr 1865 he was captured at Blakely and paroled at New Orleans on the 1st Jun 1865.

After the war, James married Mary Ann Dobbs on 10 Sep 1865 in Calhoun County, Alabama.

James and Mary lived in the Blount and Etowah County, Alabama areas. They had several children. James and Mary lived long lives, both passing their 90th birthdays. James received a pension for his military service.
