OLD-TIME BALL PLAYER DIES AT SOLDIERS' HOME.

SANTA MONICA, Aug. 15.— The death at the Soldiers' home, Sawtelle, yesterday of [Winfield] Scott Hastings, a veteran of the Civil War who served with company B, One Hundred and Forty-fifth Illinois Infantry, brought to light the fact that Hastings in his prime was one of the country's most noted professional ball players. From his effects it was ascertained that he had been a member of the famous "White Stocking" team of Chicago and in that day was a recognized force in baseball clrcles. Hastings was 61 years of age and is survived by a niece, Miss Marah Holman, a resident of Fresno. (additional information supplied by contributor Steve #47394147)
