The only son of Col Benjamin Tusten, Benjamin Tusten removed from Southhold to Goshen NY with his father. He obtained a classical education in Jamaica Queens and returned to Goshen at age 19 to study medicine under Dr Thomas Wickham. After a year, he went on to study under Dr Burnet in Newark NJ and finished his medical education under the celebrated Dr Thomas Jones of New York city. Upon his return to Goshen, he distinguished himself from other doctors in the area by his current surgery knowledge and the introduction of small pox inoculations.

As the unrest began to swell in 1775, Dr Tusten pledged himself to the cause. In 1777 he was appointed Lieutenant Colonel of the Goshen Regiment of Militia under General Allison; in 1778 he was appointed a Surrogate of Orange County.

He is best remembered for his valiant effort at the Battle of Minisink, tending the wounded militia at Hospital Rock. He was the second in command and the leading officer killed in the battle which was undertaken against his counsel. Along with seventeen wounded men, Col Tusten was ambushed and killed in the shadow of Hospital Rock.
