Hiram served in the Indiana Infantry, 153rd Regiment, Company D, as a private beginning 6 Feb 1865 until honorably discharged 4 Sept 1865. He was married to Susan Lurena Prickett (Pritchett) on 15 Mar 1856 in Grant Co, Indiana, USA. They had seven daughters. After she died, Hiram married Susannah Alzeta Wise on 18 Apr 1869 and they had eighteen children; twelve girls (two died as newborns) and six sons.

In The Taney County Republican published 26 November 1908, it was noted, "A Farmer Found Dead. Hiram Rennaker, an old soldier and farmer whose home was five miles northeast of Clarence (Mo.), was found dead in his barn Thursday night. Heart trouble was the cause of death.

According to family correspondence, "...died of a heart attack. He was sitting waiting for the children to come with a load of fodder. He did the bossing, but was unable to work for a year before his death."
