Born about 1609 (aged 25 on 30 April 1634; deposed on 29 December 1658 "aged about 50;" deposed on 2 April 1661 "aged 51 or thereabouts"), son of William Holden. (He may be the same as the Joseph Holden, son of William, baptized at Lindsey on 16 July 1609, or he may be an older, unrecorded son.) Husbandman from Lindsey, Suffolk who came to Massachusetts Bay in 1634 on the "Francis." (On 30 April 1634, "Richard Houlding," aged 25, was enrolled at Ipswich as a passenger for New England on the Francis). First settled in Watertown MA; moved to Woburn MA by 1649, Groton by 1662, Watertown again in 1676, & Groton again by 1684. Died between 23 March 1690/1 and 16 March 1693/4. (Secondary sources give the death date as 1 March 1695/6, but no record has been found to confirm this. The acknowledgment of the 23 March 1690/1 deed by the witnesses on 16 March 1693/4 suggests strongly that Richard Holden was dead by the latter date.)
Married by 1642 Martha Fosdick, daughter of STEPHEN FOSDICK {1635, Charlestown}. She died at Watertown on 6 December 1681.
Brother of JUSTINIAN HOLDEN {1634, Watertown}.
The migrations of Richard Holden during his first four decades in New England were straightforward, from Watertown to Woburn to Groton. Eben Putnam has provided great detail of his years in the latter two towns. Following the destruction of Groton in King Phillip's War, Richard Holden next appeared at Watertown in 1678, and we assume that he went directly from Groton to Watertown in 1676. During his years at Watertown, he once called himself of Cambridge; this may represent a brief stay with his brother Justinian rather than a series of moves in 1681 and thereabouts, from Watertown to Cambridge and then back to Watertown.
The Holden Genealogy online gives a death date for him. Its 3/1/1695/6.
