He was a resident of Pine River, Michigan, where he enlisted Co. A. of the 2nd Michigan Cavalry in 1861. He was mustered out of the service in Detroit on July 5, 1865. He was taken prisoner at Macon, Ga. on July 28, 1864 and sent to Andersonville Prison.

His wife was Betsey. They had a daughter, Polly, wife of Matthew Cheney. He was born in Vermont, and lived most of his life there, farming in Rutland County.
