Thomas Benton Engle, at age 18, was a private in H Company of the 85th Infantry, Illinois. H Company was organized in August 27th 1862, and ordered to Louisville, Kentucky on September 6th, 1862. They were assigned to the 36th Brigade, Eleventh Division of the 3rd Army Corps. General Gilbert was commander of the Corps., Colonel D. McCook commander of the Brigade, and General Sheridan commander of the Division. The 85th marched in pursuit of the enemy under General Bragg on October 1, 1862, and was engaged in the battle of Champion Hill, at Perryville, Kentucky, October 8, 1862. They then moved with the army to Nashville, Tennesee, arriving November 1, 1862. They then moved south and engaged in 10 battles throughout Georgia. Their last battle was at Louisville, Georgia on November 29th, 1864. The regiment was mustered out June 5, 1865 in Washington D. C.. At Camp Butler, Illinois on June 11th, 1865 they received their final discharge. Thomas had been promoted to full Corporal. In one minor skirmish Thomas was hit in his lower leg by a "minnyball", which was never removed.

CORPORAL THOMAS B. ENGLE was born on a farm near Astoria, Fulton county, Illinois, April 7, 1844, and enlisted from his native town. He was promoted corporal; served with his company through all the campaigns in which the command was engaged, was wounded at the battle of Jonesboro, Ga., September 1, 1864, and was mustered out with the regiment. He removed to Iowa in 1872, is a prosperous farmer and resides at Coburg, Montgomery county, Iowa.
