Joel Jones was the son of Enos and Mary (Streeter) Jones of Charlton, Massachusetts.

Research at the Historical Society shows he joined the Revolutionary War at the age of 16 years and was a laborer and drummer for three years. Known as George Washington's "Little Drummer Boy."

Bought a farm at Pittsfield, Vermont, in 1785. Married Sally Southgate in 1790. First child, Amplias Jones, named for his mother, born in 1791. In 1795, Sally Southgate died in childbirth. Jones married her cousin, Rhoda Sprague, with whom he would have ten children. Moved to Whitehall, Washington County, New York, in 1801. Served in the War of 1812 at Lake Champlain.

In 1817, Jones moved his family to Crawford County, Pennsylvania. One source says he settled on the top of the second hill south from Guys Mills. Here he lived with his and Sally's daughter, and his second wife and their ten children, in what was then called the deep wilderness. In 1818, Jones was granted a pension for his service in the Revolutionary War. In 1845, he died at Randolph Township, Crawford County, Pennsylvania.
