Corporal, Co. A, 20th Indiana Infantry. GAR. Enlisted on 22 July, 1861, mustered out on 29 July, 1964 in Louisville, Missouri. Served under the command of Captain VanValkenburg.
Charles F. Deibert was the son of Henry and Matilda Miller Deibert. Charles moved to Peru, Indiana, with his family at age 12 years.
On 26 Jan, 1856, Charles married Mary M. Rose. Mary died abt 1860, possible after giving birth to daughter Emma.
In 1860, Charles is living with his parents and siblings in Peru, Miami, Indiana. Also listed are his children Edward and Emma Deibert.
In 1861, he enlisted with Co. A, 21st Indiana Infantry. After his discharge, he and son Edward moved to Topeka, Kansas, where they worked for the gas company and as painters. He then moved to Santa Barbara, Calif.
He is listed on the California Voters registration, in 1875, as age 38, painter, born in Pennsylvania. On the same page are listed Calvin and Orville Dunham
On 1 June, 1876, Charles married Adelaide "Addie" Durham, daughter of Calvin Durham and Mary Elizabeth Mulholland, in Santa Barbara, Calif.
By 1879, Charles had moved to King County, Washington, and was married. His wife was Adelaide "Addie" Dunham, daughter of Calvin and Mary Dunham. Daughter Emma is also listed on the 1879 Washington territory census as living with them.
On the 1880 census, Charles and Addie are living at Lake Washington, next door to Addie's parents, Calvin and Mary.
On the other side of Calvin and Mary, live their daughter Viola and her husband DeWitt C Kenyon.
On the 1880 Washington Territory Census, Charles and Addie are also listed as living between Addie's parents, Calvin and Mary, and her brother Clifford Dunham and his family on the other side. Charles is listed as a painter.
On 30 September, 1880, Addie died in Seattle.
By the 1885 Washington Territory census, Charles is living at Salmon Bay, Washington, no longer surrounded by family. He remained at Salmon Bay until after 1887.
By 1892, Charles has moved into town, to Seattle, where he is still listed as a painter. On the Washington state census, he is living with his son, Edward H Deibert, age 24, also a painter.
On 20 January, 1883, Charles filed an application for Invalid Pension based on service with Co.A, 21st Indiana Infantry. It was filed from Washington state.
The 1890 Special Schedule for Surviving Soldiers has Charles F Deibert, Pvt., Co. A, 20th Indiana Infantry, serving for 4 years, 2 months and 26 days. He is living at the corner of May and Broadway in Seattle, and suffers from deafness.
Charles moved back to California about 1900. On 9 April, 1901, he was admitted to the Soldiers Home, Sawtelle, Los Angeles, Calif, where he died 21 November, 1901.
At the time of his death, his nearest living relative is listed as Mrs. J.H. Swift, who was his sister, Ester Louise Deibert Swift. She was living in Peru, Indiana. Charles' residence prior to admittance was listed as Latona, Wash.
In the 1900 Seattle City Directory, Charles is listed as assistant postmaster of Latona, living at Hester Ave 1 near Brooklyn Bridge, Latona, Washington.
He had outlived 2 wives.
Charles was a member of GAR, Grand Army of the Republic, Stevens Post #1, Seattle.

Charles Deibert, the eldest son of Henry Deibert of this city, and brother of Frank and William and Mrs. James Swift, died at the Soldiers' Home at Santa Monica, Cal. on the 21st, and was buried there on the 23rd. Deceased was born in Orwigsburg, Pa., and was 65 years old. He was married in this city and removed west two years after the close of the rebellion. He served through the war, enlisting in Peru in Capt. VanValkenburg's company. He lived in Seattle, Wash., until a few years ago and having lost his family-two wives and two sons-went to the Soldiers' Home. His death was caused by heart trouble."
