Lena Fay Childs Irby of Coleman went to join her husband Sunday, August 10, 1997. She was born January 29, 1910, in Harper. She was an elementary school teacher, teaching in Comanche and Silver Valley. She attended San Marcos State Teachers College.

Lena Fay married Prentice Otto Irby on January 1, 1930, in Coleman. The marriage was ‘extra’ special because it was a double ceremony with Artie Irby (Otto's brother) and Florence Seals.

Lena Fay and Otto moved to Martinez, California during the war years to help their country by working in the arsenal. While in California in 1944, a daughter, Nyla Dell Irby was born. After returning to Coleman, Lena Fay began working with her husband at the Otto Irby Upholstery Shop.

The eldest of nine children, she was preceded in death by her father and mother, Henry L. and Maudie Childs; a sister, Doris Childs; and four brothers, Shelton, Wilson, Arden and W. B. Childs.

Mrs. Irby was a member of the First Baptist Church of Coleman where the Mary Sunday school class was very special to her. Lena Fay's greatest pride was in her 23-year-old grandson, Jason Prentice Rosenstrom. Loving him as an infant and watching him grow into manhood was a great joy to her.

She is survived by her daughter, Nyla Dell Rosenstrom of San Angelo; grandson, Jason Prentice Rosenstrom of Dallas; and three brothers, Preston Childs of San Angelo, Ed Childs of California and Clifton Childs of Kansas.

We want to thank Ruth Esterwood's family, Mrs. Irby's former roommate at Baker-Brame Skilled Nursing Center, for their friendship. We also want to thank all the staff at Baker-Brame, Family Hospice and Dr. Hewell and Dr. Cook for their care, concern and friendship to Mrs. Irby.

Lena Fay was a very positive, loving, kind Christian lady, daughter, sister, wife, mother, grandmother and friend. The Christian values and morals she instilled in her loved ones and friends always will be with us; therefore, Lena Fay Irby will always be with us. We are all better people for having known her.

I love you and miss you, Mother; we all miss you. Your love, laughter, friendship and caring were so very special.

This poem expresses her final wishes:

Don't grieve for me, for now I am free.
I am following the path God has laid, you see.
I took His hand when I heard Him call.
I turned my back and left it all.
I could not stay another day
To laugh, to love to work, to play.
Tasks left undone must stay that way.
If my parting has left a void,
Then fill it with remembered joys.
Of friendships shared, a laugh, a kiss,
Oh, yes, these things I too will miss.
Be not burdened with time of sorrow;
I wish you the sunshine of tomorrow.
My life's been full, I've favored much-
Good friends, good times, a loved one's touch.
Perhaps my time seemed all too brief.
Don't lengthen it now with undue grief.
Lift up your hearts and peace to thee.
God wanted me now; He set me free!

Service will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, August 12, 1997, in Henderson Funeral Home Chapel with burial in White Chapel Cemetery.
