Civil War: Company C, 1st Battalion, Native California Cavalry

Esteban Santiago Cantúa y Lorenzana was born at Santa Bárbara, Alta California, México, on December 26 and baptized in the Presidio Chapel on December 30, 1838 (BP Baptism 01301). He was the "hijo natural" son of José Manuel Candido Cantúa y Hernández and María Gertrudis Lorenzana y Ruíz*. He became a U.S. citizen with the transfer of California's sovereignty in 1848. Santiago was living at Ventura in 1860 (1860 US Census). During the Civil War he enlisted as a corporal at Santa Bárbara July 25, 1864, and was mustered into Company C, 1st Battalion, Native California Cavalry. Corporal Cantúa was posted to Fort Mason, Arizona Territory, from September 1865 to January 1866. He returned to California with his company and was mustered out at the Presidio of San Francisco April 2, 1866. Soon after the war he was working as a vaquero at Santa Bárbara. He married María Adelyda Gracía Ruíz y Romero at Salinas, California, November 24, 1879. They had six children. Santiago filed for a Civil War veteran's pension April 22, 1892, and received application No. 1,015,403 and certificate No. 735,597. Santiago outlived five of his children. When Santiago's health failed him, he was admitted to the Pacific Branch, National Home for Disabled Volunteer Soldiers, at Sawtelle, California on May 10, 1922. According to Soldiers' Home records he died of acute alcohol poisoning, chronic asthma, and chronic myocarditis. When Santiago died, Adelyda was living at Hollister, California, and his son, [Joseph] Vincent**, was living at San Francisco. Adelyda filed for a widow's pension June 9, 1924, and received application No. 1,220,302; a certificate number for this application has not been found. Adelyda died at Half Moon Bay, California, August 13, 1957.

*Father: José Manuel Candido Cantúa y Hernández was born at Monterey December 15 and baptized in the Presidio Chapel on December 18, 1814 (SC Baptism 02932). He was the son of soldado Juan Bautista de la Luz Cantúa y Castillo and María Jacinta Hernández y Ruíz.
Mother: María Gertrudis Lorenzana y Ruíz was born at Santa Bárbara in mid-November and baptized in the Presidio Chapel on November 16, 1822 (BP Baptism 00625). She was the daughter of soldado Felipe Lorenzana (born Mexico City) and María de la Natividad Ruíz y Lugo (bap. Dec. 26, 1803, SG Baptism 03604), who were married at Mission San Fernando Rey de España on August 20, 1821 (SFR Marriage 00691). María Gertrudis married (1) José Alexo Leyba y Olivas (July 17, 1814, SD Baptism 04133) in the Santa Bárbara Presidio Chapel on April 23, 1842 (BP Marriage 00248).

**Vincent was spelled phonetically on his Soldiers' Home record as "Benson."
