John M. Irby was a veteran of the Civil War. He served with the 3rd Indiana Cavalry, Co. "C" from August 1861 to September 1864. His unit was involved in numerous battles including Second Bull Run (Manassas), Antietam, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, Brandy Station (June 1863), Gettysburg, Brandy Station (August 1863). Military and medical records document that John sustained a hand injury from a canister shot at Brandy Station on August 4, 1863. Half of his left hand was amputated leaving only an index finger and a thumb.
Military records document that in the first half of 1864 John was detached to Union Army Headquarters at Brandy Station, VA as a scout/spy. He operated behind Confederate lines gathering information for Union Army commanders.
On March 17, 1871, John committed suicide by hanging in his barn in Vermillion County, Indiana.
