The area was still known as Kanawha County, Va, when they settles in the region known as the "Three Forks of Sandy" - (now Newton, Roane County West Virginia). Hardesty's History of West Virginia states that James and Nancy Keene were living in what is now Roane County when it was created. This reference also states that James Keen was a farmer and skilled mechanic. In the years he lived in that county he held various offices of public trust; four years supervisor, six years president of the board of education, four years justice of the peace, and secretary of the society of the Baptist Curch for about 24 years.
