Matej Kouba was born February 24, 1850 in Bohemia and immigrated in 1880 to the United States arriving in Chicago. In 1882, his wife Marie and their two children Mary and Albert joined him. They resided in the Veseli, MN area for five years. In 1887, he was a pioneer settler to Walsh County, filing a homestead claim in Perth Township where he farmed and raised his family.

Matt married Marie Shirek in Bohemia around 1874. They had seven children – Mary, Albert, Elizabeth, Annie, Lenora, Frank and Emma.
Matt passed away on January 5, 1925 and was laid to rest at the Kosobud Cemetery.
