A prominent figure for many years is the field of education in the Plainfield and Hancock areas, Charles Sumner Pickering, 72, Town of Oasis, Route 2, Plainfield, was found dead in bed early this morning by his wife. Death was due to an apparent heart attack.

Mr. Pickering served over 40 years as a school board member, and was serving as clerk of the Tri-County Area Board at the time of his death. For six years he also served on the Waushara County School Committee.

He was a member of the Plainfield Masons for 49 years, served on the local boards of the A.A.A., P.M.A. and the A.S.C., federal farm agencies, and was treasurer of the Town of Oasis for 33 years.

Born Feb. 8, 1893, in the Town of Oconornowoc, Waukesha County, he was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Sumner Pickering Sr. The family moved to Plainfield when he was a child, and on Oct. 21, 1915, he married the former Ruth Marion Gooch at Plainfield. She survives.

Besides his wife, he is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Edwin (Bonnie) Boykin, Reseda, Calif; one son, Robert Pickering, Oshkosh; 11 grandchildren and three great grandchildren.

One daughter, one sister and his parents preceded him in death.
Funeral services for Mr. Pickering are scheduled for 2 p m Monday at the Plainfield Methodist Church, with the Rev. Harold Gray officiating. Burial will follow in the Plainfield Cemetery.

Friends' may call after 2 p.m. Sunday at the Goult-Patterson-Hardell Funeral Home in Plainfield, where Masonic rites will be held at 8 o'clock Sunday evening.
