Bill, as he was called, was the son of John Cummins Reid and Catherine B. Davidson Reid, Scottish immigrants from Aberdeen. His four younger siblings were all born in Dell Rapids, Minnehaha Co., South Dakota, but it is unknown exactly where in South Dakota was Bill's birthplace.

He married Mary R. Kearns, and they had two sons, Charles, who died aged 3 months, and William Gordon, born in 1908.

Bill lived in Lambertville, Hunterdon Co., New Jersey from 1895.

He was a fireman on the Pennsylvania Railroad. He leaned out of the car when he smelled burning waste, and his body caught on some iron fencing, was pulled from the cab and was tossed under the train. They took him to John Wells Memorial Hospital in New Brunswick, which is where he passed away a day later as a result of this tragic accident. Bill was only 24 years old, while his second son was two months old.
