Fred William Adovnik

HOUSTON — Fred William Adovnik, 86, died at his home surrounded by family members. He died after a nine-year battle with kidney cancer.
He was born July 6, 1922, in Rock Springs, the son of John and Agnes Adovnik Sr. He was the eldest of seven children. He graduated from the Rock Springs High School with the class of 1940.
Wishing to become a military officer, he attended Kemper Military Academy in Missouri from 1940-42. However, when World War II broke out, he served in the U.S. Army's Defense Intelligence as a sergeant major. One of his jobs was to take aerial photos of enemy targets so maps could be drawn for the infantry. He was stationed in England, Germany and France and able to take military courses at the University of Paris and at Oxford University in England.
Following World War II, he attended the University of Wyoming and in 1949 received a bachelor of science degree in electrical engineering. He also attended the University of Texas and in 1952 received a M.S. degree in economics and business management.
His first employment was in Utica, N.Y., working for General Electric in its Defense Electronics Department. There he met and married his first wife Geneva, who was also working for General Electric. In 1969, he relocated to Houston, subcontracting under General Electric for the NASA space program as a quality control engineer. His job included interviewing astronauts about the quality of their space suits in outer space or traveling to California and other states to observe missile testing. He later worked for TRW, a defense and space system group, in Houston for several years. He also worked at the Ogden Engineering Center in Clearfield, Utah for one year.
In 1984, his first wife Geneva preceded him in death after a two-year battle with cancer. He married Violet Russell on Feb. 14, 1986.
His interests included being a senior partner and advisor in the Adovnik Family Rental Business; being a computer researcher in science and medical technology, especially concerning kidney cancer; and keeping up with the latest in electronics, economics and business.
Survivors include his wife of 22 years, Violet Adovnik of Houston; one son, John W. Adovnik of Rosenberg, Texas; one brother, Henry Adovnik wife Esther of Bountiful, Utah; three sisters, Adeline M. Tarkington and husband Chester of Tucson, Ariz., Yvonne A. Profaizer and husband John of Watertown, Minn., and Mariam V. Adovnik Soto and husband Isaac of Rock Springs; nephews, David Oblock and Bill Oblock of Utah, Paul Tarkington and Ron Tarkington of California, Steven Tarkington of Virginia and Richard Profaizer of Minnesota; and nieces, Lynette Profaizer Johnson of South Dakota and Larissa Profaizer Holden of Wisconsin.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, John; one sister, Lillian Oblock; brother-in-law, Lewis Oblock; niece, Barbara Oblock McDaniel; sister-in-law, Jeanne Adovnik; and nephew, Scott Adovnik.
Funeral services will be conducted at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 14, 2009, at the Vase Funeral Chapel, 154 Elk St., Rock Springs. A parish rosary will be recited at 6:30 p.m. Friday, Feb. 13, 2009, at the chapel. Father Carl Beavers will officiate. Interment will follow in the Rock Springs Municipal Cemetery.
