Joshua, whose occupation was a Brickmaker married Olive Sturgess in St. Lawrence, Ecchinswell on 21 August 1880, and immigrated to Australia with a pregnant Olive, and two children. The family left from Plymouth, England on 11 February 1883 aboard the "Duke of Bucclench".
The ship arrived at Cooktown, North Queensland, Australia on 11 April 1883, though Joshua and Olive did not disembark until the ship reached Mackay, North Queensland, Australia. The two children, Catherine and Harry having died at sea on the 18 March 1883 and 3 April 1883 respectively.
Joshua soon set up his own brick making business, and according to family history was relatively successful. A daughter Kate was born in Mackay, and died there at nearly 6 months of age.
Joshua and Olive moved to Brisbane where he engaged in various enterprises over time including another brick making business and a candle making business.
Over time Joshua and Olive were to have 14 children, only 7 of whom lived past their 6th birthday.
