Son of John Russell and Maudie Ellis Burke, attended school to the 7th grade in Turkey Creek, Ky., last year in 1937, father of Charles Everett Burke and Maudie Ann Burke Gardner.
Daddy married my mother, Ann Matilda Joy, in Frederick, Maryland Aug 4, 1947.
Enlisted in the Army 14 Oct 1940, Fort Thomas, Kentucky, was in Co. A 10th Infantry, was a specialist: Truck Driver, Ammunition NCO, Squad Leader, lead his squad in attacks, and was a military Policeman badge # 677, served in Iceland, was in the invasion of Normany, France, where he was wounded in the upper shoulder, lost his left finger, small digit, and was awarded the Bonze Star.
Honorable Discharged 15 April, 1949, Army Chemical Center, Maryland. Retired from the Hampton Roads Army Terminal, Intelligence and Security Division, Norfolk, Va, 30 March 1965 from medical problems. Later he would work for Norfolk General Hospital, Norfolk, Va as a Heating and Air Electrical working supervisior
Everyone who knew him, loved him, he was the type who would drop everything to help another. He was a family man to the max, and never forgot his roots in West Va
