James Edward Bacchus was born October 2, 1880 in Langworthy, Iowa, the son of Robert and Sarah Bacchus, both of whom came to this country in their youth from England. He graduated from Clinton, Iowa High School in 1900, attended Cornell College and was graduated from Iowa State University, Ames, Iowa in 1906.
On February 10, 1915, he was united in marriage to Ethel Gigg Seven children were born to this union, one of whom, Pfc Sidney E. Bacchus was killed in the Philippines while serving in the army in World War II.
Surviving are his wife, four daughters, Frances of LaCross, Wisconsin; Edine (Mrs. Ned Adair), Tucson, Arizona, Urda (Mrs. Charles Wisdom), Federal Way, Washington; and Arlys (Mrs. Dolan Toth) of Circle Pines, Minn.; and two sons, Robert E. of Georgetown, Texas and Wilfred A. Newport, R.I. His sole surviving sister, May (Mrs. George W. Elliott) lives in Beaverton, Oregon. He passed away July 10, 1970 at the Douglas County Hospital.
Funeral services were held July 12, 1970 at Calvary Lutheran Church, Alexandria, with Rev. William Bruggeman officiating. Pallbearers were: John Conrad, Harold Hill, Walter Johnson, Reuben Lehman, Russell Mounsdon, Lamont Mounsdon, Robert Mounsdon and Ernest D. Peterson. Honorary pallbearers were Albin O. Anderson, Alvin E. Larson, A. G. Bartholome, Andrew Griess, Clifford Peterson, Sr., Albin Wicken, Frank Vacek, Gerald Mason and Norman Nelson. Interment was at Kinkead Cemetery.
