Rufus owned a farm on Cottonwood Creek near his parents and was in the ranching business with his father. He went on cattle drives to Abilene,KS by way of the Chishom Trail.
He married Sally Marcella Lincecum Jan 15, 1878 and they had nine children.
He was in Temple June 1881, the day of its incorporation and purchased one of the lots sold.
He died while visiting a son in Ft. Worth, TX.

There is no date on the following transcription of a clipping from a Temple newspaper:
The death of W. I. McMahan, first city marshall of Temple, Sunday brought forth many reminiscence from old Temple Pioneers.
Among the stories about the 86 year old Mr. McMahan is the one Mrs. D. M. Seybold, 1614 W. Ave.H. tells:
Mrs. Seybold's brother, the late R. M. Bigham, and Mr. McMahan were the best of friends.
Mr. McMahan almost always rode Mr. Bigham's big gray horse, "Dick", when he went out after law
breakers. And when he rode "Dick" he always came back with the man he was after, Mrs. Seybold said.
Mrs. Seybold, nee Bigham, is a real Temple pioneer and her family lived in one of the first houses to be built in Temple.
