Wilbur F. Nichols enlisted on May 11th, 1861, at New York City, New York, for two years service at the age of 23 and was mustered into service as a Private in Company G of the 38th New York Volunteer Infantry Regiment on June 3rd, 1861. He was promoted to the rank of Corporal on May 6th, 1862, and was transferred to Company B on December 21st, 1862, being reduced to the ranks at some point shortly thereafter. He served with the regiment throughout its two years service with the Army of the Potomac, being engaged in the Battles of First Bull Run, the Seven Days, Second Bull Run, Fredericksburg, and Chancellorsville. At the end of the regiments term of service they returned to New York, and Private Nichols was was mustered out of service with the Company on June 22nd, 1863, at East New York, New York.
He then re-enlisted on July 2nd, 1863, at New York City, New York, for three years service; mustered into service as a Private in Company A of the 38th New York Veteran Volunteer Infantry Regiment on September 14th, 1863. The 38th Veteran Regiment was merged with several other veteran regiments that were organizing in New York City at the time, and the company was assigned as Company K of the 17th New York Veteran Volunteer Infantry Regiment on October 14th, 1863. With this regiment Private Nichols served throughout campaigns in Kentucky, Tennessee, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, South Carolina, and North Carolina, as part of the army of Major General William T. Sherman. After taking part in the Grand Review in Washington, D.C., in May of 1865, Private Nichols was honorably discharged from the service on July 13th, 1865.
