John Morse was 19, and living in Bradford, Franklin Co., Iowa, when he enlisted as a Private in Co. B of the 7th Iowa Infantry on Oct. 14, 1861. He was wounded in the nose on Nov. 7, 1861, at Belmont, Missouri. Morse was discharged from the 7th Iowa Infantry on March 22, 1862 at Pittsburg Landing, Tennessee.

He enlisted for the second time on Dec. 26, 1863, in Co. H of the 4th Iowa Cavalry. He was put on detached duty, and later transferred to the veterans reserve corps at Springfield, Missouri. Morse was mustered out of the service on August 22, 1865, at Springfield. He died at the home for disabled soldiers in Leavenworth, Kansas, in 1905.

He applied for his Civil War pension on Sept. 10, 1892. His application is #1,130,975, and his certificate #983,196.
