As a young woman in the 1920's, she went to New York City to pursue her dream in fashion design. There she met John Parry Laird, Jr. who was working there at the time. John and Deborah were joined in marriage in a civil ceremony on June 4, 1920 in Chicago, Cook County, Illinois, with John's brother Arthur McDougald Laird and his wife Annie Catherine Looney at witnesses.
John and Deborah soon made their home, in 1929, in San Francisco, California, where John was employed as a civil engineer with the Western Union Telegraph Company.
To their union two children were born; Fleur Bissett Laird and John Parry Laird, III.
Following John's death in 1957, Deborah moved to Virginia to be closer to her daughter, Fleur. Deborah was active in her book club, charitable fashion shows and other activities which kept her young at heart. She continued to live independently and drive into her nineties.
Following a couple of years of declining health due to falls, it was in Virginia that she died. She leaves behind both her daughter and son, seven grandchildren and many great-grandchildren.
