Town Marshal Patrick John Hatton was killed in the line of duty on November 2, l909. He was born September 8, l871, in Wicklow, Ireland. He left behind his wife, Hannah Onken Hatton and three daughters ages eight, five and four months old. He was Pat to his family and friends and PaPa to his children. Daughter Marguerite states "PaPa was a dapper dresser always looking spiffy". He loved to sing and dance with "his ladies"(wife and children). He was in his second term in law enforcement and was well respected in the community.

Much has been written about his death. He was shot by a criminal who was running away and firing a pistol over his shoulder at anybody behind him, Marshal Hatton had one bullet graze his left ear and one bullet hit him in the back as he turned to help his deputy. The theft was arrested and sentenced to life in prison. Daughter Madeline(four months old at the time of his death) made it her life mission to collect all information regarding her father's life and death. She attended all parole hearings in order to be sure the life sentence for his killer was carried out.

The life and death of Pat Hatton is a story of loss and sorrow still felt to this day by his family. What he could have done as a husband, father and American citizen will never be known. I had the honor many times to go to lunch with "his ladies". His three girls talked of their father with smiles and toasts to "Papa and Ireland",

Rest in Peace til we meet.....Grandchildren
