Mary was the wife of Lewis E. Ackley, a Civil War veteran from Vermont.

Obituary of Mary Ackley published in the Portland Observer, Wednesday, January 30, 1907:

Death came as a great relief to Mrs. L. E. Ackley last Thursday night at her home on the north side.
For more than 35 years she had been an awful sufferer from asthma, and during all that time she had not lain down in bed to sleep as most people sleep but had sat propped up in bed or in a chair; and often during daytime she was compelled to stand for hours erect between two chairs in order that she might breathe with any degree of comfort. And during a few days prior to death her suffering was pitiable and intense.
She was 60 years of age.
Mrs. Ackley, who was the mother of Frank Barber of this village, was married to Mr. Ackley in Athol, Mass., coming to Portland eight years ago from Lake Odessa.
She is survived by her husband and one child of this union,
Mrs. Fred Robinson of this village, a son and a daughter by her former husband reside n Vermont. Neither was here to attend the funeral.
Funeral services were conducted Sunday afternoon by Rev. Hageman from her late home, interment in Portland cemetery.
