1942 Obituary:
Harrie Jones, widely known Indiana horseman and secretary of the Indiana Trotting and Pacing Horse Association, died at his home in Rushville early Wednesday morning, June 24, after an illness of several months. His wife died a month ago, May 25, and the only survivors are cousins.
Harrie was known far and wide in the harness racing world and was a personal friend of owners and trainers of trotters and pacers almost from coast to coast. In his earlier days he was a prominent and successful trainer and driver, and in more recent years he served with marked efficiency as secretary of the I. T. & P. H. A. and assistant speed superintendent at the Indiana State Fair.
More than 70 years of age, Harrie began his horse racing activities at an early age and was known as the ''kid driver'' on Hoosier tracks in the late 80's.
Living all his life in Rush County, in or near Rushville, Harrie carried on training operations on a track built on the Jones farm near the city. Scores of noted performers of both gaits were developed and driven by him. Among the speedier ones were George Gano 2:02, a very successful campaigner in 1911; Alcyfras 2:03, a fast roan pacing mare which took her record the same year; and Harry the Ghost, which raced to a record of 2:041/4 in 1913.
Harrie's active training days ended in the 20's after he had been in charge of unusually large stables for several years. Later he took the position of assistant speed superintendent at the state fair and the secretary job for the Indiana Trotting and Pacing Horse Association. He was largely responsible for building the I. T. & P. H. A. into a large and active association sponsoring a series of two- and three‑year‑old stakes annually with purses amounting to thousands of dollars.
Harrie also was made secretary and treasurer of the Indianapolis Speed Sale organization when it was formed in 1929 and played a very important part in the development of this auction into one of the major annual sales of trotters and pacers.
Funeral services were held Friday afternoon, June 26 in a Rushville Funeral Home, with interment in the Rushville cemetery.

To breed horses, train and race them, has been a Jones family trait handed down from father to son for generations, and it was but natural for Harrie to be bred up in the profession and adopt it as his vocation when he grew to manhood. In 1891, two decades ago, when but a youngster, Harrie started fighting a race driver's battles with Black Wilkes, giving him a record of 2:291/2 that year. Two others of his stable then were Polka Dot 2:28 and Geneva Wilkes 2:231/4. Soon after this trio of high-wheel winners came Dolly Brown, p, 2:161/2, Jones' first shy at the Grand Circuiters was with the pacer Cyclone 2:111/2, that he took through the big circuit in 1893, and on to Nashville, Tenn.
