My Grandfather.

Fred Graves was my Grandfather, he was married to Carrie Leslie Sanders Graves, also of Blount County. He had three sisters,Desslie(I remember her as Aunt Dessie)L Graves m Joseph Thomas Rogers, Grace Jane Graves Musgrove m William H Musgrove and Ruth Ann Graves(never married)born 1882 died 1967. He had several brothers,Thomas Grover Graves married Mae Arwood, Dowman Fitzhugh Graves married Annie Ruth Lowery, Joe Ralph Graves(Uncle Ralph - loved going to his old grocery store in Blount County), married Mary Hickman Graves.
He retired from U S Pipe & Foundry in Birmingham. He had one son, George William Graves (Billie Jo Newsom Graves)and four grandchildren, George Robert Graves, Debra Lynn Graves, Donald Wayne Graves and Ralph Frederick Graves. Great Grandson David George Dawson.
A couple of things I remember about Granddaddy was he loved to fish, and any time would do. Another thing when I had an apple I would always take it to him to peel, he would take his pocket knife out and the peel was never broken, always just one long circle of peel, for some reason that always amazed me. He loved chocolate cake! I baked him one on the day he passed away, but not before he had eaten a rather large piece. He was always happy, I don't think I ever heard him raise his voice at anyone. He was a very kind, Christian man.
I remember he had the clearest blue eyes - My oldest brother got the blue eyes, I got my grandmothers brown eyes.
My brothers and I had to drive him to Blount County a few times a year to Sulfur Springs, to taste the sulfur water from the springs, we couldn't stand the smell, but he loved it. We all miss him greatly.

Thanks to Dianne, his great niece, for the pictures !
