Fillmore Benjamin Alvin, 94, of North Branch died on Oct. 29, 1995. The son of John Elof and Alice (Holm) Alvin, he was born on Nov. 17, 1900 in North Branch.

He joined the Alvin & Co. Lumber and Hardware business in 1917, the second generation in a three-generation business. In 1929, Fill married Doris McCrady and to this marriage one son, Michael Jon, was born in 1939.

Fill lived his almost 95 years in North Branch, except for a time in 1919 when he attended St. Paul Business College and during 1921 when he tried out for the pro baseball team in Wichita, KA. He returned to the store, joining his father and brothers, Oliver and Everett, in the lumber business. In later years, he was sole operator of the store until son Michael joined him. After Michael's death in 1970, Fill kept the store open, selling in 1972 to Lamperts.

Fill was a confirmed and faithful member of Trinity Lutheran church of North Branch. He was also a member of the Masonic Lodge for over 70 years and was a Past Master.

Fill held memberships in the North Branch Civic club and the North Branch Volunteer Fire Department. One of his favorite stories was about his duty in the National Home Guard during the great Moose Lake fire of 1918.

Fill loved people, enjoyed making friends and recalling family history. He was loyal to his community, his state and his country. As new people came to town, he loved meeting them and was proud of all who made North Branch a friendly city.

His family and friends will miss him greatly for with Fill around it was impossible to have a down day. He knew the great joy of living.

In addition to his son, Fill was also preceded in death by his brothers, Oliver and Everett; nephews, Robert and James Alvin; sisters, Judith Zeien, Alphild Casey, Ethelyn Grandin and Elizabeth Petoscia.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by grandson Eric Alvin and his wife, Karen Timberlake; granddaughter, Kristen Leigh; nephew, Richard Alvin and his wife, Phyllis, and family; Candice and Larry Anderson; Jill and Michael Moen and family; Jon Alvin and his wife, Beth, and family; Thomas Alvin and his wife, Shelley, and family; Allan Alvin and his wife, Ruth, and family; Mrs. James (Venus) Alvin and family; Thomas Zeien and his wife, Shirley, and family.

Funeral services were at 11 a.m. today, Nov. 2, at Trinity Lutheran Church in North Branch. The Rev. Clayton Rudolph officiated. Debra Aulich was organist; Eileen Fisk sang. Casket bearers were Tom Alvin, Scott Alvin, Fred Remund, Jon Alvin, Mark Howard and Larry Anderson. Interment was in the church cemetery.
