She married Stephen Webb Welch in 1962. Sue and Steve moved their young family to Connecticut in a VW Bus in 1967, later moving to Ohio, then to Fredonia, NY. They divorced in 1977. She met her second husband A.J. "Van" Van Poortvliet, through friends at the Dunkirk Yacht Club in Dunkirk, NY.
