Excerpts from "The Oilman Who Didn't Want to Become a Millionaire," by Howard Brunson, 1955, pages 16-18:
Mother, with her quiet and calm disposition, was never flustered no matter how many demands were made by her big family.
Mother's father had been a doctor, and as a girl she had learned a great deal about making medicine from herbs. She helped gather the herbs and could make medicines for fever and for every kind of rash, colds, and pneumonia. Not a one of us thirteen children ever had to go the hospital; and the doctor bill for the entire family wouldn't have exceeded two hundred dollars.
After bearing thirteen of her own children, Mother acted as a mid-wife and helped bring at least one hundred more children into the world. She was always ready when a neighbor needed her; she would drop everything to go nurse the sick. After she was past fifty years old, the family put its foot down and told her that she just couldn't help deliver any more babies. Even after that, however, I can remember the doctor would seek her advice on many children's ailments.
