Loving Mother and Teacher
Mona V. McMillion, 90, of Alamogordo, passed away Sunday, April 26, 2009, in Alamogordo.
Mona was born Feb. 10, 1919, in Smith County, Kan.
She was born the fourth child to Emery Vinton and Clara Ethel (Atwood) LaRue.
While living in Lebanon, Kan., Mona was baptized as a teenager and attended and graduated from Lebanon High School. She also attended summer school at Northeastern Junior College in Greeley, Colo. She received her teaching qualification and taught for seven years in country schools in Smith County, Kan.
Mona married Rolland Schenk Sept. 28, 1940, at the Methodist Church in Kearney, Neb. They had three other children, Sherrill, Robert and Gale. Together they farmed in Smith and Jewell County, Kan., until 1955 when Rolland passed away.
She and the children moved to Akron, Colo., where she worked and supported her family in a very loving and caring way.
She later married Jim McMillion Dec. 25, 1959, at the Church of Christ in Akron, Colo. They moved to Las Animas, Colo., where they ran and operated a theater and laundromat. In 1969, Mona and Jim moved to Fort Morgan, Colo. Mona was a member of the First Christian Church and she enjoyed working at the library since she had a passion for reading. She also enjoyed spending time with and being around her family.
After Jim passed away, Mona moved to Eagle, Idaho, to be closer to her son Gale and his wife, Ann.
In 1995 Mona moved back to Fort Morgan and in 2005 she moved to Alamogordo.
Mona is survived by her daughter Sherrill White and her husband, Delbert, of Centennial, Colo.; sons Robert Schenk and his wife, Margaret, of High Rolls, and Gale Schenk and his wife, Ann, of Ashton, Idaho; stepdaughters Collie Balek, of Arvada, Colo., and Miki Knoll, of Kittridge, Colo.; grandchildren Robert Schenk Jr., Lee and Lynetta White, Lara Lopez, Tresa Mason, Mike Knoll, Christine Chase, Cid MacDonald and Jim Knoll; 30 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; three sisters-in-law, Edna LaRue, of Downs, Kan., Marie Pucket, of Franklin, Neb., and Velda Schenk, of Smith Center, Kan.; brothers-in-law Dean Schenk, of Kearney, Neb., Jack McMillion, of Fort Morgan, and Marion McMillion, of Carpenteria, Calif.; and several cousins, nieces, nephews and many friends.
Mona was preceded in death by her parents Vinton and Ethel LaRue; husbands Rolland Schenk and Jim McMillion; sisters Estelle Billings and Lola Mallory; and brother Marvin LaRue.
A memorial graveside service will be conducted at a later date at North Oak Creek Cemetery in Smith County, Kan.
Cremation services are under the direction of Hamilton-O'Dell Funeral Home.
