Daughter of James T and Mary Richardson Hadley. Wife of Col Thomas Nichols.

Danville Hendricks County Republican
Danville, Indiana
March 22, 1888

In Memorial.
Died at 6 o'clock a.m. at her late residence in Danville, Mrs. Martha Nichols, in the 79th year of her age.

Martha Nichols, wife of Thomas Nichols, was the daughter of James T. and Mary R. Hadley; was born in Chatham County, N.C., April 23, 1809; removed to Indiana with her parents in the year 1825; was married to Thomas Nichols in Danville, Dec. 4th, 1827. The couple were among the first that obtained license to marry in this county. The fruit of this union was nine children, six of whom survive her. She identified herself with the Methodist Church of this place in 1857. In the trials and privations incident to pioneer life, Mrs. Nichols bore her full share with that heroism which characterized the sturdy first settlers. When Col. Nichols had a contract on the White River canal fifty years ago, his young wife had the care of two children, yet cooked for eighteen boarders. In all her subsequent life she has lived without reproach, a faithful wife and mother, a good neighbor and a devout Christian. She leaves in addition to her immediate friends, a large circle of acquaintances and relatives who mourn her death as if she were the mother of them all. Such is the reward of the good, the true and the virtuous.
She was buried yesterday at 2 o'clock p.m. in the south cemetery, Revs. D.M. Wood and J. Hull officiating. The funeral was largely attended. The sympathy of the entire community is extended to the afflicted family.
