Alfred Mordecai was born in Raleigh, Wake Co, NC, 5th of 8 known children born to Samuel Fox Mordecai Jr. & Elizabeth "Betty" Grimes, a lawyer and later professor at Trinity College. Alfred was born into an already distinguished and prominent family, being the grandson of Samuel Fox Mordecai Sr. of Mobile, Al, and his wife (and 1st cousin) Ellen Mordecai, daughter of Judge Moses Mordecai & Margaret "Peggy" Lane; and gr-grandson of Dr. Solomon Mordecai & Caroline Waller of Mobile, AL. On his maternal side, he was grandson of Major General Bryan Grimes, Jr. & Elizabeth Hillard Davis. He is the namesake of his half great uncle, Major Alfred Mordecai of Philadelphia, of Civil War fame.
Alfred became a physician and then served for over 25 years with the United States Medical Corps (1918-1944), rising to the rank of Colonel, and seeing service during World War I. It is not known how he met his future bride, Elsie Elizabeth Hess of Madison, WS, but it is known she traveled to his post in the Philippines to marry him on November 8, 1928.
Following his retirement from the service in 1944, Col. Mordecai was soon offered the position as Health Officer for the newly created Health Department for Davie, Yadkin, and Stokes County in Western North Carolina in November 1945, and he and Elsie relocated to Winston-Salem in Forsyth County where the department was headquartered. His second career allowed Alfred the opportunity to indulge his interests in conservation, astronomy, horticulture, and rural culture and the folk traditions in the area surrounding Blowing Rock, NC.
Alfred died in Blowing Rock on September 2, 1975, at age 86. His body was returned to Raleigh for burial in the Mordecai plot at Oakwood Cemetery. His wife survived another 16 years, and died in Winston-Salem. She was buried with her husband in Oakwood.
