Blanchard Man's Mother Made a Royal Wedding Dress for Victoria in 1840
Members of her family recalled during the height of interest in Princess Elizabeth's nuptials and press description of her wedding gown that the late Mrs. Robert McKie of Blanchard made another wedding gown worn by British Royalty.
Mrs. McKie, who died many years ago, was Miss Janet Sweeney when she made the white satin gown worn by Queen Victoria on Feb 10, 1849, when she became the bride of Prince Albert.
The dress had a train nine feet long all sewn by hand as it was made several years before the sewing machine was invented. Miss Sweeney, who was chosen to make the gown because of her skill in needlework, married Robert McKie and came to the United States, settling three miles west of Blanchard.
