His death certificate indicated that he was employed as a shoveler in the lead and zinc mines. He died at 3:20 a.m. at Thom's Station from shock and internal injuries due to falling down a mining shaft.
*Thom's Station was a mining area near Carl Junction, Mo in Jasper county. There was never an incorporated town there, mainly a mine and a trolley stop.

It should be noted that the inscription on the stone has glaring errors. The facts are noted below:
•On the death certificate the date of death was given as December 5, 1911
•The coroner E. H. Baird signed the death certificate on January 5, 1912 (date of death)
•The death certificate was filed on January 5, 1912
He was buried on January 7, 1912
•Also noted, the informant gave his birth date as January 18, 1883 which conflicts with the dates on the stone.
He was buried in what was referred to on the dc as the old Baptist Cemetery (now known as Forest Park Cemetery) under the direction of Hurlbut Undertaking Company.
The death certificate can be viewed at Missouri Digital Archives/death certificates online website and is found under Layfaett Carver Jasper county year of 1912
