James Stewart Hanks was born on 15 Apr 1805 in Montgomery County,Kentucky, the son of Rev. William and Mary "Polly" Stewart Hanks. He died on 29 Dec 1882 in Putnam County, Missouri. James was married first to Rose Hannah McMullen on 16 Oct 1823,Gibson county,Indiana. Rose Hannah died in 1841. She was the mother of eight of his children:
