John Jefferson Hooper was 24 years of age when he, along with his siblings and their families, accompanied his parents, Richard and Isabella, to Texas from Tennessee in February, 1836. Receipts from the Land Commission of Shelby County, Texas confirm that John J. received a league and labor of land in Shelby County that same year. As a citizen of the Republic of Texas. John witnessed (attested) a land transaction for his father, Richard, in January of 1837 in a signed receipt just prior to leaving for Alabama to take a bride. He married Alta Sarah Bounds in Morgan, Alabama on 28 March, 1837.
John Jefferson is listed on the tax rolls of the Texas Republic in 1840, according to the 1840 Census of the Republic of Texas. The 1850 federal census shows the first child born to John J. and Alta Sarah was in Tennessee in 1839, but their second child was Texas born in 1840. John obviously brought his family back to Texas before 1840.

According to "Hooper Geneology A Southern Branch" Vol-2 by Flora Hooper Collier, He had eight children:
William C. Hooper, Betty Hooper Davis, Jim Hooper, C.P. Hooper, Lon Hooper, Francis Marion Hooper, Mahalia Hooper Oliver, and Martha Ann Hooper May.

According to the 1860 federal Census, John J. and Sarah had nine children at home at the time of the census.
