Otis served as a Sergeant First Class, Light Weapons Assault Infantryman assigned to Company C, 1st Battalion, 19th Infantry Regiment, 24th Infantry Division, U.S. Army during the Korean war.

He died in a POW camp after surviving the Tigar death march during the war and his remains were never found.
