Mildred L. Tuttle, age 84, of 428 W. Walnut in Cherryvale, died Sunday morning, May 6, 2001 at the Cherryvale Care Center where she had been a resident the past two months.

Graveside funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. on Thursday, May 10 at Fairview Cemetery in Cherryvale with Charles Smart, son-in-law of Mrs. Tuttle, officiating. Friends may call at the Potts Chapel in Cherryvale from 8 a.m. until 9 a.m. on Thursday.

Memorial remembrances have been suggested to the World War II Memorial or Court Appointed Special Advocacy Services and remembrances will be received at the Potts Chapel.

Mildred La-Voughn Tuttle was born Jan. 28, 1917 in Radley, Kan. to Brian Allen and Gussie (Hobbs) Allen. She grew up and attended school in Cherryvale, graduating from Cherryvale High School. She made her home in the Cherryvale area most of her life with the exception of a period of time during World War II when she worked in the shipyards in Richmond, Calif. She then returned to this area where she was employed at the Independence Army Base, the Reliance Mfg. Co. and the Electra Mfg. Co. and also did domestic work during the years.

On Sept. 10, 1934, she married James Leonard Gilliland, and the couple later divorced.

On Jan. 26, 1947 she married Maynard H. Tuttle and he preceded her in death in 1979.

She attended the Nazarene Church in Cherryvale.

Surviving is one son, Maynard Douglas Tuttle of Independence; two daughters, Connie L. Smart of Independence and Judith A. Byram of Billings, Mont.; two foster daughters whom she helped raise, Virginia L. Bryant of Stockton, Calif., and Pam Martinez of Covina, Calif.; eight grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; one brother, Howard Allen of Dearing.
