Athens - Dr. William E. Townsend, age 81, of Athens, died March 23, 2009. A native of Island Falls, Maine, Dr. Townsend was the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. William Wallace Townsend. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army. He received his B.S. degree from the University of Maine and the M.S. and Ph.D. degrees from Michigan State University.
He was employed by Swift and Company for six years in Chicago, plus 33 years of federal service, of which 30 of those years were spent as a Research Scientist with the Agricultural Research Service of the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Dr. Townsend retired in July 1994 after 25 years of service with the Richard B. Russell Agricultural Research Center in Athens. He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church and served as an Elder.
Survivors include his wife of 60 years, Lilly J. Townsend of Athens, a son, the Rev. Dr. Larry Townsend and wife Bonnie of Hampton and a daughter, Andrea L. Townsend-Purdy and husband Sean of Norcross, two grandchildren, Shanthi Caballero and Jonathon Purdy and two great-grandchildren, Julian and Jordan Caballero, two half brothers, Wallace, who preceded him in death and Almon Townsend, both of Island Falls, Maine, a half sister, Madelyn Hawks of Maryland and several nieces and nephews.
Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, May 2, 2009, at Trinity Lutheran Church, 2535 Jefferson Road, Athens, GA 30607 with the Rev. David Heller officiating.
The family will receive friends at the church beginning at 1 p.m. Saturday. A reception will follow the services.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Trinity Lutheran Church, 2535 Jefferson Road, Athens, GA 30607, the American Cancer Society , 1684 Barnett Shoals Road, Athens, GA 30605 or the Athens VFW Post 2872, 835 Sunset Drive, Athens, GA 30606.
