Thomas Shatswell,Jr. only known son of Thomas Shatswell, Sr. and Hannah nee:Rowell. I can only speculate that Thomas and his sister Elizabeth were raised by their maternal Grandmother after both his parents had passed away.

On November 21, 1835 Thomas enlisted for a three year stint in the US Army. He is described as 27 years of age, five feet, eight and one half inches tall with a fair complexion and grey eyes and black hair. Thomas was assigned as a blacksmith to Troop F, 1st Regiment of the Dragoons or Calvary. He was stationed at Fort Gibson, Indian Territory and on the Mexician frontier later to become what we call the state of Texas.
