Here/Repose in peace,/Until the resurrection of the Just,/The mortal remains of/JAMES LEGARE Esquire./Who closed a life of benevolence & usefulness/On the 11th day of January A.D. 1830./Aged 68 years./His name/Is recorded in the annals of his Country/As a Patriot who bravely fought in her battles/And whose sagacity & firmness aided her counsel/He was/Distinguished in every sphere of life./By energy consistency and integrity/His extensive charities to the distressed/His efficient patronage of benevolent societies/And his munificence to the institution of Religion/Endear his name and his memory to the wise & good/As a public benefactor./In every social relation./He exhibited an attractive pattern/Of mildness, dignity, and affection/As a Christian he was/Strong in faith fervent in prayer./And fruitful in work of holiness./As an Elder in the Church/Her welfare and purity lay near his heart./And his whole influence was exerted/To advance the interest & extend the triumph/Of the kingdom of Christ./To this Blessed cause/His wealth, his time and unwearied efforts/Were cheerfully devoted/But while honoured and revered by others/He was clothed with humility/To the cross he looked as his refuges and glory/And all his hope was fixed upon it's great/Atoning sacrifice/This supported./He viewed the approach of death with calm/Resignation/And passed through severe protracted suffering/Cheered with an unclouded prospect/Of a blessed Immortality/The Righteous shall be in everlasting remembrance.
