On Wednesday, April 22, 2009, retired Lt. Commander Glenn Richard Farrar, 74, passed away peacefully at Pensacola, Florida's West Florida Hospital surrounded by family.
Lt. Commander Farrar was born October 30, 1934 to Percy and Bertha Farrar on the family's dairy farm in Cape Girardeau, Missouri. In 1956, he graduated from the University of Missouri with a degree in agriculture. Three years later, he received a commission in the United States Navy as a naval aviator. Having spent much of his distinguished career as a pilot and flight instructor, he rose to the rank of Lt. Commander and received numerous and notable decorations, medals, badges and commendations for his service, which included a tour in the Philippines as a member of Squadron VP40. He was particularly proud of his ability to teach and took pride in his decoration for years as a flight instructor without an accident. After his retirement, Lt. Commander Farrar continued his desire to teach by joining the public school systems of Escambia and Santa Rosa Counties.
In 1956, Lt. Commander Farrar married his college sweetheart Janet Adair. They raised three sons which he is extremely proud of: Jeffrey, Scott and Gregory. After Janet's death, Lt. Commander Farrar married Patricia Churchill and became a loving stepfather to her children Bucky, Adele (deceased) and Julia.
A faithful and devoted man with a talent for dancing, Lt Commander Farrar led by example and lived life to the fullest. He demonstrated these qualities as a member of the First City Church in Pensacola and as a member of the Eagles, the American Legion, Elks Lodge 2108 and the Grotto and Rhythm Lovers Dance Clubs.
Lt. Commander Farrar is survived by his brothers Paul and Gene and his sisters Geraldine, Margie and Dorothy. He is also survived by wife Patricia, his son Jeffrey and his wife Mary, their three children Mark, Lisa, and Brett, his son Scott and his wife Melissa, their children Ashley and Daron, his son Gregory and his wife Cynthia, their children Alexander and Kealy, Bucky, Adele's husband Jeff and their children Jeffrey and Tommy, Julia and her children Erin and Jennifer and five great grand children.
The family extends a special invitation to join them at Oak Lawn Funeral Home (619 New Warrington Road, Pensacola, FL) Sunday, April 26, 2009 between 5 p.m. and 7 p.m. to celebrate the life and memory of Lt. Commander Farrar.
Memorial services at Oak Lawn Funeral Home will be held at 9 a.m. on Monday, April 27, 2009. Burial services with full military honors will be held immediately afterwards at the Barrancas National Cemetery at the Pensacola Naval Air Station.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to either the Farrar Charitable Foundation "Give The Coat Off Your Back Drive," which provides for the homeless in our area in care of the Farrar Law Firm, 109 North Palafox Street, Pensacola, Florida 32502 or a similar charity of your choosing.
The family would also like to take this opportunity to thank the nurses and support staff at West Florida Hospital for their attention and their kindness during Glenn's final days.
